The sudden closure of Annecto, a 70-year-old aged care and disability services provider, has sent shockwaves through Australia’s care sector. With over 3,000 clients and more than 1,000 staff affected, this development underscores the urgent need for strategic leadership in aged care and disability services. 

Understanding the collapse

Annecto has announced that it will stop operations by July 2025 due to ongoing financial issues and changes in how services are delivered in the aged care and disability sectors.

The organisation reported a net surplus of $993,000 for the 2023–24 financial year; however, this figure masks deeper problems. Industry insiders say the provider has faced higher operational costs, workforce challenges, and more complicated regulatory requirements and consumer expectations.

In 2024, an audit by the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission revealed serious issues, including inadequate clinical oversight and ineffective risk management. These compliance issues may have added to the financial and reputational pressures, leading to the decision to close down.

The closure has left thousands of vulnerable Australians scrambling for alternative care arrangements.
